Walking with Oxygen Campaign - Living life with Oxygen
|
In my 7 years on Oxygen at first it was a shock then it became a challenge. I had always enjoyed my holidays visiting places such as India, Canada, Egypt and Turkey amongst others so life was changed. From looking forward to a new career as a primary school teacher I faced new challenges. It took a while to get some basic fitness and stamina but eventually the walk to the local park as well as walks whilst on holiday were a challenge. But then after visiting so many places abroad I knew that there was plenty in the UK that I had not seen. So visits to the Lake District, Suffolk, Devon, Wales and more followed. I have also enjoyed going to Concerts, Ballet and the Theatre. Some extra planning is required but I could still do it. Being a Tennis fan meant that visits to Queens twice and Eastbourne once in the run up to Wimbledon were most enjoyable. Eventually after seeing what some friends had done we ventured abroad to go on holiday to Normandy and then to the Dutch Bulbfields organising Oxygen abroad. So life was getting better. To spend time with nieces and nephews and take them places and enjoy their young lives has also been great fun. You appreciate a walk along a beach because you know it is flat. You just don't do steps!! So the Matterhorn is out but I have climbed my own mountains. A couple of years ago I went back to Northern Ireland for the first time since I was on Oxygen and we drove to Scotland and then went to Larne on the boat. We picked up some cylinders from a local pharmacist and went out and about visiting various family and friends and it was marvellous. To go to the Giant's Causeway where I spent so much time as a young girl was fabulous. To walk down to the Causeway and then get the bus up was so enjoyable. Last year we did the same trip as one of my younger brothers was getting married. To enjoy the wedding and the dance floor was very special. This year I have been distracted by my concerns about Oxygen but have enjoyed 2 holidays. The above picture of me and my Oxylite at Highcliffe Castle near Christchurch shows what ambulatory Oxygen means to me. It means life and freedom and choice. |
